Merkur Merkur, a factory of leather handbag production, was founded in Serbia in 1926 by Franco Aisenhut (Austrian) and Blasek Gez (Hungarian). Favorable natural conditions were especially suited for production of high-quality leather products in this country, situated in the heart of Western Europe: rich black soil, wonderful ecology, and plenty of sun and water promoted the development of cattle breeding and the tanning industry. A very important contribution was the ancient tradition of making leather goods, and today the leather manufacture is based on time-proven methods, using natural materials such as mimosa, chestnut, quebracho, cod-liver oil and lecithins. On February 26, 1936 the small private workshop turned into a factory of the state and began manufacturing metallic furnishings besides leather goods. During World War II the factory didn't stop working; it manufactured a variety of leather goods for the army’s needs. Yugoslavian leader Iosif Broz chose a lot of gifts from Merkur for important visitors: Indira Ghandi, Sophia Loren, Nikita Khruschev and many other statesmen and public figures. The present President of Serbia, Boris Tadich continues the tradition. The Merkur factory has won many prestigious Yugoslavian awards: "Labor Gold Medal", "Gold Deen", and "Gold Dragon". In the decades that followed the start-up of the factory, it developed and structurally changed. Originally fully owned by the state, today Merkur is a state-of-the-art modern factory that is a fully equipped high-tech work place, located on over 16 thousand square meters of work space. The factory is capable of catering to complex, quality volume orders. After almost 40 years, Merkur now exports its products to countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Austria, and Hungary. It provides products for Western European films (for example Marco Polo), and governments of the leading world countries purchase army and police goods from Merkur. Besides their basic production of ladies’ and men's bags (sport, evening and business), and small leather goods (belts, purses, etc.), Merkur also has a special line of golf and luggage accessories: suitcases, travel bags, etc.
